We walked through the fog and mist without seeing more than Ring-billed Gulls until we spotted the resident Mockingbird guarding his holly berries. Highlights include two Great Blue Herons, a Red-tailed Hawk eating a rat (hopefully not a poisoned one), and four Ring-necked Ducks at the pond.
Pleasant Farms (Howard County Conservancy)Seven of us enjoyed a morning of birding in Ho County at Mount Pleasant Farm. Chilly at first, but for the most part a beautiful sunny day. Even better than that, as the rain diminished a double rainbow appeared!

The first bird spotted was a FOS Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. We saw quite a few, and several Eastern Phoebes also flitted around the park. A FOS Junco was also briefly seen in the community garden. Enjoy photos from the walk, and be sure to join us in November.
A lot of walking AND A TON OF PALM WARBLERS. Not much in or around the marsh--so dry. The new impoundments were nice with sparrows, including several Savannah and one Lincoln's. And the loop trail in the woods was productive in a couple of spots. Got a winter wren late in the day. Only two shorebirds. The thing we will remember is all the palm warblers--many of both types--and many others we didn't ID b/c so many.
One lone Purple Martin did zip by. Enjoy photos from walk - join us Oct. 9th - last year the park was packed with birds!
We found two
uncommon species of native orchids in bloom: yellow ladies slippers and
showy orchis. Birds were few and far between but we enjoyed hearing an
ovenbird and saw a turkey vulture low in deep woods and heavy brush -
kinda odd.
Cold temperatures and overcast skies held down the bird activity a bit but none the less a good trip with some nice birds. Most activity was in the field edges and hedgerows. The forest was very quiet. The surprise of the trips was several flocks of very high migrating Common Loons. Also great scope looks at singing Eastern Towhees.

Six of us enjoyed early spring
wildflowers on the alluvial flood plain. Peak bloom is about a week to 10
days away, late this year. Thanks for coming Tom, DJ, Mary Lynn, Alex and
friend!

Bryan
Beginning from the fountain, we spotted Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Pine Warbler, Juncos, and many Brown Creepers. I'm always glad to see creepers north of the city - that means they have dodged the glass and buildings on their way to their breeding grounds. Numerous Brown Thrashers were seen throughout the park.
A majority of the participants had just started birding - a few others had only been birding for a few years. North Point is a perfect place for birders of any level - there are woods, wetlands, fields, and the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. It's very easy walking, and from Memorial Day to Labor Day, a visitors center is open.
